INGREDIENTS:

500g of #BakeOn Strong White Flour

14g of #BakeOn Yeast

45g of Butter

2 tsps of Salt

1tsp of Sugar

240ml of Lukewarm Water

Coarse Salt for Sprinkling on top

3 tbsp of Bicarbonate of Soda

METHOD:

1. Place your flour, sugar and salt into a mixing bowl and mix together.

2. Create a well in the centre of the flour and add in your water, yeast and softened butter. Bring this mix together with your hands until a dough is formed.

3. Begin to knead the dough for 10 minutes to create a stretchy structure. The best way to test if your dough has been kneaded enough, is to lightly press on the dough and if your fingerprint bounces back, it’s ready!

4. Return your dough into your mixing bowl and leave for 1 hour to rise in a warm part of the kitchen. After one hour, remove your risen dough from the mixing bowl and knead for a further 5 minutes.

5. Divide your dough into 10 roughly equal sized portions. Now this is the fun bit – shaping! Grab one of your portions of dough and roll into a long sausage around 20cm long. We did this by rolling the dough between the palms of your hand.

6. Now create a U shape with the dough, twirl the two ends together twice and bring down to attach to the bottom of the U. Dab your finger in water and onto the seems of this to ensure a secure attachment. Repeat the shaping process for all 10 pretzels.

7. Leave your pretzels to rise for 10 minutes on a floured surface.

8. Pre-heat your oven to 190°C. Meanwhile, bring a pan up to the boil with water. The water should be at least 15cm deep.

9. Once boiling add the Bicarbonate of Soda to the water. This will fizz, so don’t be alarmed!

10. Prepare 2 large baking trays with baking paper.

11. To give the pretzel its signature crust, drop a pretzel into the boiling water and boil for 10 seconds on each side. Do this one at a time to avoid them sticking.

12. Remove your boiled pretzel with a slotted spoon and place onto your baking trays. Repeat this for all 10 pretzels.

13. Once you have boiled all of your pretzels, you can then sprinkle your coarse salt over each of them.
