While we count down the days till the clocks spring forward (come on 27th March!), now is the best time to focus our energies on getting organised and welcome the new year with a fresh start. Many of us are natural organisers, whereas some of us need a little more inspiration! So we’ve put together some handy tips to get your home in good shape for 2022!

1. Make it fun!

Turn up the music or put on a favourite podcast and grab some snacks (to maintain energy levels of course!!). Discover the joy and satisfaction in transforming your home.

2. One space at a time.

If there are several areas in your home you are looking to get under control, consider your priorities – is it the first room your guests will see? The room most in need of a sort out? The smallest room so you can get into the swing of things? Whatever the answer is, choose one and stick with it so that the task doesn’t seem quite so daunting and you’re less likely to give up.

3. Clear out.

Choose one section of your room at a time and methodically sort through your possessions, deciding whether you still use or love them enough to keep them (channel your inner Marie Kondo!). Have a bin bag for items to pass on to friends / family or resell, another for charity and another for items you cannot donate and need throwing out / recycling. If you’re unsure whether you want to keep an item, hide it in a bag and leave for a month – chances are you’ll forget all about it and parting with it will be much easier!

4. Give yourself time.

Allow yourself the time to organise each room and be realistic about how long it will take to complete. Smaller spaces might only take you a couple of hours, whereas you may allocate a weekend to larger ones.

5. Be creative with your space – discover a life hack!

If space is lacking, take a step back and consider whether a new layout will give you more room. Make use of additional space for storing items, for example using storage boxes under the bed. Our favourites include using a Lazy Susan in the fridge (no more routing around for jars at the back!), boxes and crates to create extra shelving and door hanging shoe storage to organise, well… anything!

6. Accessibility.

Make the items you reach for the most, the easiest to access and vice versa with the belongings you don’t reach for regularly – these can be tucked away! Keeping your most used possessions easily accessible will make maintaining a tidy room much easier. Why not go one step further and whip out your trusty label maker so you know what’s in any container before looking inside!

7. Tap to tidy.

Surely the best thing about tidying your space is that satisfying Instagram post showing the before and after. Take some photos so you can remember what the space looked like before and inspire others to do the same.
